Reviewing Organisational Structure to Support Growth and Purpose

Client: Mental health service delivery organisation
Background
A not-for-profit mental health organisation sought external support to review its organisational structure. The organisation was experiencing a period of growth and wanted to ensure its structure was fit-for-purpose to support future service delivery and remain aligned with its mission. Beacon Strategies was engaged to explore both the strengths and challenges of the current structure and to identify future options that would enable effective leadership, operations, and member engagement.
Approach
The project was delivered through a structured and participatory approach. We began by working with executive leadership to clarify project goals and expectations. A desktop review was conducted to understand the current structure, leadership roles, strategic direction, and any prior consultation with staff and members.
Engagement with internal stakeholders was central to the process. We gathered insights from staff, the board, and members through a combination of interviews, focus groups, surveys and written submissions. External benchmarking was also undertaken, reviewing the structures and functions of five comparable organisations.
A workshop was held with key decision-makers to explore the findings and analyse structural options. A set of future-state scenarios was then developed and documented in an options paper, with each scenario outlining alignment to strategy, benefits, risks, and implementation considerations.
Outcome
The project resulted in a tailored options paper, synthesising findings and presenting a series of possible future organisational structures. The paper was designed to support structured internal discussion and decision-making. It included analysis of alignment to strategy, risks, and change management requirements. Feedback from the options paper informed the final report, which included refined recommendations and practical implementation guidance.
