Advisory Support to Review and Strengthen Organisational Structure of a state-based mental health advocacy organisation

Background
A state-based mental health advocacy organisation engaged Beacon Strategies to support a review of its operating structure. The organisation, which plays a key role in monitoring, influencing and advocating for improvements in mental health and wellbeing, had experienced changes in its strategic focus and operating environment. This created an opportunity to assess the fitness of its internal structure and capabilities to deliver on future priorities.
Approach
The project was delivered in four components:
We began with a discovery phase to clarify the drivers of the review and co-develop a work plan. This included confirming focus areas, identifying key documents, and designing engagement and benchmarking activities.
We undertook desktop research and internal engagement to build a picture of the current structure, roles, and capabilities, and to identify organisational strengths and limitations.
An initial future state model was developed based on emerging insights and comparable examples. This included a draft structure, capability mapping, and key design considerations.
We incorporated organisational feedback and delivered a finalised structure, supported by implementation guidance and communication materials to support internal transparency and change management.
Outcome
The project resulted in a revised organisational structure aligned with strategic direction and desired impact. We provided advice on change sequencing, position description updates, staff consultation, and internal messaging to support a smooth transition and enhance organisational readiness.
