Board Workshop Facilitation to Support Strategic Clarity and Direction

Client: National peak body for community mental health
Background
A national mental health peak body engaged Beacon Strategies to design and facilitate a series of workshops to support strategic alignment and decision-making. The organisation was seeking to revisit its purpose, clarify its role within the sector, and reflect on its internal capacity and external positioning. The workshops were intended to support the Board and Executive Leadership Group to consider a shared path forward in the context of evolving sector dynamics and feedback from member organisations.
Approach
The project was delivered in four components:
We began with structured 1:1 interviews with members of the Executive Leadership Group and CEO to gather a range of perspectives and insights. These were synthesised into de-identified summaries to inform workshop planning.
We then designed a tailored facilitation approach for a two-day, in-person workshop series with the Board and ELG. This included agendas, session materials, and consolidated information inputs.
We facilitated both sessions, guiding participants through discussions on purpose, strategy, organisational capacity, and future direction. The workshops included reflective dialogue, scenario exploration, and identification of priority actions.
A summary report of workshop outputs and recommended next steps was delivered to the Board to support ongoing planning and execution.
Outcome
The workshops enabled the Board and Executive Team to explore key issues and reach agreement on a strategic direction aligned with the organisation’s purpose and role. The facilitated sessions created space for honest reflection and practical action planning. Beacon Strategies provided a concise summary of outcomes to support further work on governance, resourcing, member engagement, and positioning within the broader mental health sector.
