Review of Governance and Financial Sustainability for a National Peak Organisation
Status: Completed 2024
Client: National peak body and member network
Background
A national peak body and its associated member network engaged Beacon Strategies to provide independent advice on governance and financial sustainability. The review was commissioned to support future strategic direction, ensure effective governance arrangements, and identify sustainable funding approaches across the network.
Approach
The project was delivered in four components:
We conducted a desktop review of strategic documents, governance structures, and undertook benchmarking of comparable peak body models.
Structured consultations were held with leadership from each network member to gather perspectives on purpose, services, governance, membership and income structures.
We developed an options paper in collaboration with the national CEO, outlining future governance and sustainability models, which was tested with the wider network.
Final recommendations were presented in a written report addressing strategic priorities, governance structures, financial models, and next steps for implementation.
Outcome
The review helped the national organisation and its members identify a sustainable path forward. Recommendations included the development of a new strategic plan, creation of a shared Member Charter, transition to an independent board, and exploration of diversified funding options. Further structural reform considerations were identified for future review.
