Background
Karakan wanted to bring greater clarity and consistency to how it understood and communicated impact across its services. The organisation had strong internal knowledge of its work and the changes it sought to create, and needed a structured process to draw that knowledge together into a coherent framework.
Rather than outsourcing development of the framework, Karakan sought focused facilitation, coaching and technical support that would help its team work through key concepts, make decisions and build an approach it understood and owned.
Approach
We worked alongside Karakan through a series of collaborative working sessions. Beacon’s role was to provide structure, prompts, examples and technical guidance, while Karakan’s team contributed the organisational knowledge, tested the emerging ideas and made the substantive decisions about what best reflected its purpose and services.
Facilitated structured conversations about organisational purpose, outcomes and impact.
Provided coaching on impact frameworks, theories of change, outcome statements and measurement approaches.
Helped organise and refine ideas generated through the working sessions.
Developed draft materials between sessions so the Karakan team could review, challenge and improve them.
Supported discussion about how an organisation-wide approach could complement, rather than replace, program-level evaluation.
Helped identify practical next steps for progressively strengthening data collection, monitoring and reporting.
Outcome
The collaborative process supported Karakan to develop an organisation-wide impact framework that connects its purpose, services and intended outcomes in a clearer and more consistent way.
Because the framework was developed through joint working sessions, the process also strengthened internal understanding of impact concepts and supported organisational ownership of the emerging approach. The work provided a practical foundation that Karakan could continue to refine as its measurement practices and evidence base developed.
