Review of Community Suicide Prevention Service for Gold Coast PHN

Status: Completed March 2023

Client: Gold Coast PHN

Background

In 2020, Beacon Strategies, in partnership with Wesley Mission Queensland and Gold Coast PHN, led the co-design of a service model that aimed to provide tailored psychosocial support to people experiencing suicidal crisis or in situational distress within the community and primary care setting.

The service aimed to identify people experiencing situational distress in the community and connect them with emotional, practical and coaching support, with a particular focus on linking with a person’s regular GP. The service commenced in December 2020 and was extended until 30th June 2023.

GCPHN engaged Beacon Strategies again in 2023 to undertake a review of the Community Suicide Prevention Service that would inform GCPHN’s ongoing approach to suicide prevention services in the region.

Approach

We approached this review in five phases:

Phase 1: Project establishment

Understand project drivers, develop project schedule and project management approach, enabling visibility of project deliverables, timelines and accountabilities.

Phase 2: Service review plan

Develop a structured plan to review the program in collaboration with key staff, including reviewing program data and stakeholder engagement.

Phase 3: Situational analysis

Undertake targeted desktop research to summarise strategic priorities, the PHN operating environment and need.

Phase 4: Data collection activities

Undertake data collection and analysis activities, including program data and stakeholder engagement.

Phase 5: Reporting and recommendations

Develop a service review report summarising project findings and provide recommendations to GCPHN regarding ongoing commissioning of the service.

Vision Alignment

This project aligned with Beacon Strategies vision of a more impactful social purpose sector. The project review allowed GCPHN to tailor the service so that it could meet the needs for a wider range of people experiencing mental health problems and reveal areas that need more work or opportunities to develop their services.

Outcomes

We delivered a final report presenting the key findings and recommendations from the Review of the Community Suicide Prevention Service for Gold Coast PHN in March 2023.
